Re : Eclipse 550 tuto N°1 : Modeling the outside body

Hi D.E.

I cannot read the first attachment.
Can you try to send it with servimg.com ? This is a good site to host pictures that you will be abble to put in your message as I do.

On the second one, I can see that you put way too much faces !
For FG, a circle of 32 is enough. You can use the "smooth" tool when you finished you plane's body to have a similar result.

In your case, it is too difficult to use the second method. I will have too much work to merge the edges.

Now if you really want to do it this way :
Turn your circle 90° on x axe.

Pull it on y axe as close as possible from the body,
Edit it and move each vertice on y axe up to touch the body : you will see when you clic and drag the green arrow, a line appear going through the body, just move the vertice at the point it desapear inside the body and pull it back slightly to see it again.

Now that your circle fit to the body, edit the body and remove all the vertices witch are inside the circle (do it in wireframe mode to see it better).
Select all the remaining vertice arround the circle and press "f" to make a new age that will run arround the circle.
Keep it selected, and select the circle (shift+alt+right clic one one of the vertice, then again on the following one along the circle. That shall sect all the circle vertice at once), hit space barre and type edge, choose "merge edge loop".

Just to be sure nothing is wrong with the normales, select all faces and clic "recalculate" in left "transform column.

Et voilà you have new faces to join the circle to the body.

Also, try to tune little bit better you body shape, for aerodynamic reasons, for the nice looking, but also to give you less headaches when working on modeling (join parts, cut faces etc.).
I would suggest you to resise your body circles as indicated bellow :

blende10.png

The lines runing along the body must be smooth, avoid theses "angles".
See how its done for the gear wheel housing (I suppose you copy them from another plane?), they have regular shape.

Enjoy, and do not easitate to bother me if you did not understoud.

Re : Eclipse 550 tuto N°1 : Modeling the outside body

OK, I found what was wrong to get your pictures. I can read them now.

I would suggest you to make a new body (I had to redo the one for the Caravelle about dozen times before to get something nice), and use circle from 32 vertice only.
It is difficult to see what's happening with all these vertice.
When you will be done with all the cutting and modifications, you will be abble to add more face if you wich.
But with FG, try to have as less as possible faces. Look message #51 how many face S-KIMO did use.

The problem is that you selected too much vertice, and from both side (that happend when you are on "wireframe mode, it select every thing you can see. You must select only the vertice from the side toward you.
Go on "Solid" mode, select the icon just after the "face selection" icon, so you wont select a verticle from the opposite side.
Just jump from "wireframe" to "Solid" when necessary by hitting "z".

Now, if you want to cut both side of the body, better to use modified cylinder as cutting tool.

Re : Eclipse 550 tuto N°1 : Modeling the outside body

Yessssss,

OK, save your work before to do the next manoeuver.

I ) Temporary door :

Just try to adjust little bit more the vertice on the back (our right).

Then (I just realised that now : we must keep the inside zone to make the doors), so we will change the procedure little bit.
It is almost the same manoeuver.

1) keep the circle selected, select the body vertice just outside the circle, all arround this circle,
2) Go on edge mode, so you shoud have two lines : the cirle and the frame arround the circle,
hit space barre and type "edge", "choose merge edge loops",

Now your circle is the frame for your future door.

3) Select the former circle vertice again, go on left transform column, clic "duplicate, so you juste made the door frame,
4) keep it selected, ans select the body vertiles just inside this frame,
5) Now if yoour little bit clever, you shoud guess what to do.................. like for the body frame, go on edge mode and merge the two lines,

Now you have the door frame,
6) Keep it selected, and select all the verticles inside the circle, so you will have the wool door semected,
7) hit the space barre and type separate, or press shift+p, clic on "selection.

Voilà, your door is ready under the name "Body.001", just rename it as "LeftDoor" or Door-Lh".

II ) The definitive doors

Go back on what you saved at the beginning,

In view to make the definitive doors, go on side view (numpad 1) in wireframe, with the side view (your drawing), on background.
Adjust the circle vertice to the line of the door frame from your drawing,

Then move your body object to adjust the the vertice like before on y axe,

Then you know the rest of the maneuver to finiche the job by joinning the new circle to the body and then axtract the new door.

So I let you think about how to cut this new door in two parts to have a front door and a rear door............. hint : Knife "k"..........

OK, now you know this type of modification, try the method with cylinder cut object to cut both side in the same time.
Don't forgot to creat a copy of your body object to become a door object.

If you have other question, I'm not far from my PC, as I'm busy with that :
rostoc10.jpg

My hopfully futur 3D printer Rostock Delta, enlarged to print object from about 50x50 cm, made from secound hand material.
The paper is an A4 page, the Cola bottle is a 2 Ltr one, just to have an idea of the sise (you can see as well the radiator on background).

Goooood, go head.

Now, you have a better idea why it is important to choose where to put your circles when extruding the body !!
Now you wont make your door here, it is just to practice the method N°II, but you can see that if we had made a circle just where the front of the door beguin, we wont have too much ugly shape around the door frame.

The same circle I told you to keep selected in point 1)
When you are at point 3), that your door frame that you joinnned with the body.

As the border of the door is suppose to go inside this frame, we use the same one so we are sur that they match exactly.

After point 7, you can reduce you door object but juste little bit to have a little play between your door and the frame of the body.

I have made screen-shots to show you the different steps to have that.
So I'll put it a ZIP file and give you the link to download it as well as the Blender file.

Re : Eclipse 550 tuto N°1 : Modeling the outside body

Hello there,

So, where are we with your plane?

You will have to think about few things on technical side.
I have made a concept plane base on you drawing but with lots of personal assumptions as you did not give enough details :
d-echo12.png

As you can see, I have pouched the things fare on concept :
-The propeller in on the back to leave better visibility to the pilot;
-Based on your drawing, there is no poles between doors and windows (again for better visibility), so there is a special frame running underneath the floor to get the plane structurally strong enough to support the strength;
- There is only two seats on the back, but we can put three (it would be one more original thing);
- The horizontal and vertical stabs are below the plane's tail to take less place when the wing is dismantlement for transportation of the plane in it's trailer;
- The engine is between the luggage compartment and the propeller;
- And, of course, there is a glass cockpit

Re : Eclipse 550 tuto N°1 : Modeling the outside body

Salut Didier,
A+

Picture 02 How I extrude the body in view to put circle where will be cut;
Picture 03 and 04, the tool in place ready to cut with bolean function;
Picture 05 the cuting tool hiden to see what we got (You can see that on roof edge, it is not regular;
Picture 06 re-do of the same, but using the knife on the body, around the cuting tool;
Picture 07, you can see that the edge are better this way;
Picture 08, using bolean "intersect" to create the doors;
Picture 09, deleting the edges in the middle of the doors volume to get the doors;
Picture 10, placing a cylinder to cut between the front and rear doors;
Picture 11, the front door in place;
Picture 12, the doors volume without the rear door and rear window;
Picture 12, the rear doos and window;
Picture 14, placing a cylinder to cut the window;
Picture 15, the rear door;
Picture 16, the window;
Picture 17, the doors opened view from 3/4 front;
Picture 18, the doors opened view from 3/4 rear;

And, as well the Blender file, so you can see better vertice edges and faces.
I modelise it quickly so there is still lot to correct, but at least you will have a better idea.

So together with the tuto and the last messages where I answear your questions, you should be abble to do the same

Good luck............

Re : Eclipse 550 tuto N°1 : Modeling the outside body

D-Echo,
This is suppose to be the next step after we finished with the exterior !

In fact, the way I use to create the interior, is to use the exterior model, reduce it separately on x, then on y and finally on z, then reverse the normals.

So, as we have long week-end (tomorrow is day off in France), I'll try to begin the second tuto.

S-Kimo,
